Debuting in 1986 as the “second channel” or luxury-with-performance brand from Honda in North America, the Acura brand was a masterstroke. The Civic, which people had fallen in love with as young car-owners was now selling Honda’s reliability coupled with luxury to the same populace, who were now at higher echelons in the economy and society.

Soon, Toyota with its Lexus and Nissan with its Infiniti jumped into the wagon, hoping to cash in on the Acura’s splendid acceptance. The Legend sedan and Integra sporty coupe being its two variants, Acura hit the nail hard and all were trying desperately to land an Acura. And then came the least expected turn of events. Even though Acura had huge equity reserves in the Legend and Integra variants, the Acura Legend gave way to the 3.5RL and its erstwhile name was dropped.
To fill the gap, the Vigor was briefly introduced, but that too was dropped as the Honda Acura went alphanumeric launching the 3.2 TL and 2.7 TL.
