A CUV or Coupe Utility Vehicle produced by GM Chevrolet, the El Camino was launched in 1959-60, paused and then relaunched in 1964 remaining more 20 years in production upto 1987. The El Camino was launched as a rival to the successful Ford Ranchero. Based on Chevrolet car lines, the vehicle is deemed a truck in North America. The Chevrolet Sprint, a variant was introduced in 1971, and rechristened as the Chevrolet Caballero in 1978. Its brand name in Mexico was the Chevrolet Conquistador.
